The main defence line of the Ukrainian armed forces has been broken in Avdiivka, Russian media report, with the result that the fighting is taking place inside the city!
Avdiivka Zero hour
More specifically, the Russian defence website SvPressa reports that the Russian army is now trying to take revenge on the battlefield for the Ukrainian army's "barbaric" attack on Donetsk on 21 January. The Ukrainian strikes left at least 25 people dead and at least 20 wounded.
"Undoubtedly the Ukrainians knew they would kill civilians. They simply wanted to take revenge for the Russian army's breaking of the main defense line in the direction of Avdiivka and for the capture of the Ukrainian installation Tsarskaya Okhota in the same area. Although they complain about the lack of ammunition, the enemy continues to brutally pound the capital of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR)," the page wrote.
According to new reports from the front, Western and Russian media are reporting new changes in the direction of Avdiivka. Russian fighters seem to have indeed succeeded in breaking through the Ukrainian defense line and are now pushing hard at this point, as if they have found the Achilles' heel of the Ukrainians. Their attacks are described as "bold" but "successful", SvPressa stresses.
Even some Ukrainian analysts have admitted that the defense line in Avdiivka, a line that began construction in 2014, has completely fallen as a result of the repeated Russian attacks. Many Ukrainian defenders have been killed in this area in recent days.
"Stabilisation measures are underway by the Ukrainian army, however if these measures do not succeed then the entire eastern part of the city and the surrounding area will be at risk," foreign media suggest.
On the other hand Russian internet sources provide more details of the situation. Geo-location data and reports from Russian army officers indicate that Russian forces have advanced southwest of Kamenka, thus entering Operation Raduga. After fighting in this area, Ukrainian soldiers are said to have retreated towards the town of Avdiivka.
The city is mainly besieged by Russian infantry, which with the help of artillery and air force (and drones) is methodically clearing the outskirts of the city.
One Ukrainian said in a video that "the Russians flatten everything and then send in the infantry to check and clean up what is left".
