Many analysts agree that Russian forces are advancing in Ukraine at a much faster pace than during the initial days of their invasion, capturing hundreds of square kilometers over the past month.
"The battle is just beginning," Russian analysts argue regarding the escalation on the Ukrainian front in recent weeks. The election of Donald Trump in the U.S. accelerated developments, particularly following his statement that he would end the war "in a single day."
The war is evidently entering its most dangerous phase, according to Russian and Western officials, as Russian forces have made significant territorial gains, and the U.S. has permitted Kyiv to use American-made missiles to strike targets deep within Russian territory.
The advance of Russian forces
"Russia has set new weekly and monthly records in terms of the areas it has captured in Ukraine," reported the Russian independent news outlet Agentstvo. Last week alone, Russian forces seized nearly 235 square kilometers, marking a weekly record for 2024, the report explained.
Furthermore, the Russian army gained control of 600 square kilometers during November, according to Agentstvo, citing data from DeepState, a group closely linked to the Ukrainian military that analyzes battlefield material and creates frontline maps.
Vladimir Putin has warned of more strikes using the new Oresnik missile on the battlefield in Ukraine.
The massive deployment of this weapon could be compared to the use of nuclear arms, stated the head of Russia's strategic missile forces.
Putin highlighted that Russia has a stockpile ready for use, just a day after launching an experimental ballistic missile targeting the Ukrainian city of Dnipro.
The missile is capable of striking targets across the entirety of Europe.
Russia began advancing at a faster pace in eastern Ukraine in July, shortly before the Ukrainian army launched a surprise attack in Russia’s Kursk region, taking control of some territories. Since then, the Russian advance has accelerated, according to maps from open-source intelligence.
What the new report reveals
Russian forces are advancing toward the Ukrainian city of Kurakhove, located near Pokrovsk, a logistical hub in the Donetsk region, exploiting weaknesses in the Ukrainian military on the frontline, analysts observe.
"Russian forces have been advancing at a significantly faster pace recently compared to the entirety of 2023," analysts from the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War noted in their report.
The Ukrainian military’s General Staff highlighted in its briefing yesterday that 45 battles of varying intensity were ongoing along the frontline in Kurakhove.
"Russia’s advances in southeastern Ukraine are largely a result of identifying and exploiting weaknesses in Ukrainian forces," the Institute for the Study of War explained. Russia has reiterated that it will achieve all its objectives in Ukraine regardless of Western actions or statements.
What president Zelensky stated
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly declared that peace cannot be achieved until all Russian forces are pushed out of Ukrainian territory and all occupied regions, including Crimea, are returned to Ukraine.
Zelensky has assessed that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to seize the entire Donbas region—including the Donetsk and Luhansk provinces—and to expel Ukrainian forces from Kursk.
However, the numerically smaller Ukrainian army faces difficulties in recruiting new members and equipping its forces, further complicating its resistance efforts.
