A few hours ago, the American press unanimously reported a very rare incident: the super aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman of the United States Navy collided with a commercial vessel named Besiktas-M in the Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of the Egyptian city of Port Said.
How did the ships collide?
"The USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, was involved in a collision with a commercial vessel named Besiktas-M at approximately 11:46 p.m. local time on February 12, while operating near the city of Port Said in Egypt in the Mediterranean Sea."
"The collision did not endanger the Harry S. Truman as there were no reports of flooding or injuries. The power systems were unaffected and remain in a safe and stable condition. The incident is currently under investigation. More information will be provided soon."
Although this official statement from the U.S. Navy confirms that no U.S. military personnel were injured, the fate of the commercial vessel’s crew remains uncertain.
"The other ship sustained damage to part of its hull (above the waterline), but continued to sail under its own power," revealed a U.S. Navy official, who added that "the Truman was preparing to depart southward towards the Suez Canal. No damage was caused to its nuclear reactors."
Shortly afterward, in a follow-up update, U.S. media revealed that the Besiktas-M was a bulk cargo ship flying the flag of Panama. It is a 188-meter long vessel that was sailing north and had just departed from the port of Aqaba in Jordan. According to reports, its destination was the port of Constanța in Romania, on the Black Sea.
Finally, we would like to inform you that the U.S. Navy declined to answer a journalist's question regarding the exact extent of the damage caused to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.
