Anger from Bulgarian nationalist party over extension of water supply to Greece for Evros needs

Anger and strong opposition were sparked by Bulgaria's extension of water supply to Greek territory on the Arda River to meet the irrigation needs of the northern Evros region this year.

K. Konstantinov, leader of the Bulgarian nationalist party "Revival," criticized the agreement between Bulgaria's National Electric Company (NEC) and Greece on this matter, claiming that the agreement was made incorrectly, according to novinite.com.

According to Konstantinov, the Bulgarian NEC service entered into the agreement not with the Greek state, but with the Region of Macedonia and Thrace, agreeing to extend the water supply until the end of this summer.

He claims that "this resulted in Bulgaria providing free water to Greece, tens of millions of cubic meters, not as part of reparations, but for something he believes is a scandal."

The leader of the "Revival" party also noted that despite his party submitting a proposal to hold hearings with various ministers on the issue, the President of the National Assembly blocked it, dismissing the request as pointless.

Konstantinov's accusations highlight "the lack of legal grounds for Bulgaria to continue supplying water to Greece after the expiration of a previous agreement related to war reparations."

Furthermore, Athens has pressured Sofia to extend the agreement, citing its failure to secure sufficient water for irrigation in the Western Thrace region.

This had led to protests from local farmers in Greece, who were dissatisfied with the government's inaction in addressing their water needs, but now the problem has been temporarily resolved, and we are awaiting a new official bilateral agreement with Bulgaria.

What is the agreement between Greece and Bulgaria's electricity service?

The new temporary agreement ensures the uninterrupted use of Arda River water by Greek farmers until the end of the irrigation season on September 30, reports the entral Union of Municipalities of Greece.

This interim agreement is necessary to allow the required time to complete negotiations for the final long-term agreement on the distribution of Arda water (95% of which is in Bulgarian territory), which was interrupted in early April due to the fall of the Bulgarian government.

The agreement, which regulates the quantity and process of releasing water volumes from Bulgarian dams to the Greek side, was signed by the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Christodoulos Toptsidis, and Martin Georgiev of the Bulgarian electricity company National Electric Company EAD (NEK).

Through this interim agreement, the Bulgarian electricity company NEK is committed to supplying 77.9 million cubic meters of water to Greek farmers, ensuring full water supply for farmers in the northern Evros region, meeting irrigation needs without financial burden.

This quantity is allocated during the irrigation period according to the needs of local farmers and is slightly increased compared to the amount specified in the 60-year agreement that expired, despite the river flow being at unprecedented low levels (below half of its usual annual flow).
