In more detail now and according to various reports in foreign media, including a post by Clash Report on X (formerly known as Twitter) the Kurdistan Workers' Party of Kurdistan (PKK/YPG) yesterday Friday 12 January 2024 is said to have infiltrated a Turkish military base in northern Iraq killing 9 Turkish soldiers.

This group is considered terrorist by Ankara and other countries and is known to be supported by the United States. Thus the recent strike further increases tensions between Ankara and Washington, as well as anti-American sentiment among the Turkish people. The Turks believe that the Kurds' successes on the battlefield are the result of American aid.

"Despite claiming to be an ally of Turkey, the United States continues to provide support to one of the world's most dangerous terrorist groups," the medium said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ordered a security meeting to be held in Istanbul today. Erdogan will attend the meeting along with top Turkish officials, including Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Interior Minister Ali Yerglikaya, Defense Minister Yasar Guler, Turkish Army Chief of General Staff Metin Giourak and Turkish National Intelligence Organization chief Ibrahim Kalin.

How many soldiers were finally killed?

Another recent report covering this incident of the Kurdish attack on the Turkish army base in northern Iraq reveals that 5 Turkish soldiers were killed and 8 others wounded. This media outlet cites a disclosure by the Turkish defence ministry itself.

The Turkish base is said to have been in the zone of the Turkish military operation Operation Claw-Lock, an operation aimed at neutralising the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

On the Kurdish rebel side, the same media reports that 12 fighters were eliminated by the Turkish army's retaliation. Clashes between the two sides continue to take place in the region. Of course, it remains unknown how many of these 12 Kurds were killed, wounded or captured by Turkish forces.

It should be pointed out, however, that the day before yesterday, that is to say Thursday 11 January, one Turkish soldier was killed and another wounded in clashes with the Kurds in a different part of Iraq.
