F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets of the Turkish Air Force were recently seen in the airspace of Idlib in Syria. Now Turkish defense media reveals the reason why Turkish fighters operated in that area.
Why did they fly Turkish F-16s into Idlib?
More specifically and according to information obtained by the Turkish defence website SavunmaSanayiST from sources within the Turkish Ministry of Defence, Turkish F-16 aircraft entered Syrian airspace to detect an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).
The report added that after spotting it, the Turkish F-16s proceeded to intercept the unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle. The drone in question was said to be approaching Turkish military positions in the Syrian city.
The Turkish F-16s, each carrying 2 AIM-120 AMRAAM medium-range air-to-air missiles and 2 AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missiles, intercepted the unidentified UAV without the need for an engagement, the Turkish media reported. So as we understand it, the drone was not shot down, just its pilot changed course when the Turkish fighters approached.
The Turkish Defense Ministry sources specifically said that "on January 7, 2024, an unmanned aerial vehicle of unknown origin was detected that could threaten our bases in the Idlib region. It was immediately intercepted and intercepted by aircraft belonging to our air force. The actions on the Syrian border are carried out in close cooperation with the Russian Federation."
Based on the above and given the conflict between Turkish and American forces in the region, we can only say that there is a possibility that the drone in question was an American drone. The Americans also claim interests in the Syrian region and often clash with the Russians. They regularly take off UAVs to monitor foreign military forces, control them and when necessary strike them.
At the same time, we must stress that there are several bases of the Turkish armed forces in Idlib, which are working for the interests of Erdogan. The city of Idlib itself is located in the north-western part of Syria, about 60 kilometres from Aleppo. It was one of the first cities to see fighting at the start of the Syrian Civil War in 2011.
