Second Evening Cola for Yemen

In more detail and according to new reports from Reuters news agency, the United States carried out additional strikes against Yemeni Houthi forces yesterday, Friday 12 January 2024, shortly after US President Joe Biden made a public pledge to protect maritime trade in the Red Sea.

The latest strikes came almost 24 hours after the first US and British strikes, which took place on Thursday night against Houthi infrastructure. The Houthis, who are openly supported by Iran, saw one of their radar sites attacked by US fire last night.

The US guided-missile destroyer USS Carney using Tomahawk missiles in the early hours of Saturday today (local time) is said to have "degraded the Houthis' ability to attack naval vessels, including merchant ships", the US Central Command of the US Armed Forces in X.

The Houthi movement's Al-Masirah TV channel reported that the United States and Britain targeted Yemen's capital Sanaa with airstrikes.

As we informed you yesterday, US and British warplanes, ships and submarines launched missile attacks on Thursday against Houthi targets across Yemen, raising concerns about an escalation of the conflict in the region. The reason for this Western campaign was the recent threats posed by the Islamist group to merchant ships transiting the Red Sea. The Houthis were attacking ships sailing to or from Israeli ports, thus showing their support for Palestinian Hamas.

Houthi leaders vowed to retaliate against the Westerners after the first strikes on Thursday. But yesterday US leader Biden warned Yemen that it could order more strikes if the group does not stop harassing military and commercial vessels in the important Red Sea region.

"We will assure that we will respond to the Houthis if they continue this unacceptable behavior," Biden told reporters during a brief visit to Pennsylvania yesterday.

Witnesses confirmed that explosions were heard early yesterday Friday local Yemeni time at military bases located near airports in the capital Sana'a and the city of Taiz. Meanwhile explosions are said to have taken place at the Yemeni naval base in the port of the city of Al Hudaydah, which is the country's main port on the Red Sea. Finally, it is said that the Americans also targeted military positions in the Hajjah region.
