Just 67 kilometers from the nearest coast of Somalia and 222 kilometers from the capital Mogadishu, lies the area where the Turkish research vessel Oruc Reis will conduct its explorations.
According to the NAVTEX issued by the hydrographic station of India, which is responsible for issuing relevant maritime instructions, the Turkish vessel will begin its research on October 18 and will remain there until May 16, 2025.
It is important to note that during this entire period, it will be accompanied by two frigates of the Turkish navy, a support ship from the Turkish fleet, and three vessels from the Turkish oil company.
This means that the Turkish research vessel will be occupied in Africa until the middle of next spring, and any movement by the Turks in Libya will either have to take place next summer or utilize the other vessel, the Barbaros.
As we first revealed from Pentapostagma, the mission of the Turkish research vessel Oruc Reis in Somalia is simply the first step in extracting the natural resources of countries that have effectively become Turkish protectorates.
We are talking about Somalia, Libya, and recently the island complex of São Tomé and Príncipe in West Africa, which has essentially surrendered its sovereignty to Ankara.
A report from the pro-government newspaper Yeni Safak emphasizes that the energy initiatives launched by Ankara will expand, following Somalia, into North Africa with the aim of extracting hydrocarbons.
According to the report, the next step will focus on Libya.
The oil crescent
According to Yeni Safak, Turkey has secured the relevant licensing for exploration in both land and maritime areas of Libya as part of ongoing negotiations. Ankara's interest is focused on the so-called "oil crescent," a region with significant hydrocarbon reserves.
This issue was raised at the Energy and Economy Summit in Libya held earlier this year and again during the visit of Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar to the United States.
Areas awaiting exploration
Through the National Oil Corporation (NOC), Libya seeks to develop joint energy projects with Turkey, particularly in the extraction, production, and distribution of hydrocarbons. Notably, 40% of Libya's oil and gas reserves, both onshore and offshore, remain unexplored, making Tripoli's engagement with Ankara essential.
According to the National Oil Corporation of Libya, there are 29 new oil fields and 12 natural gas fields both on land and at sea. Libya's territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone cover a vast area from its border with Egypt to Tunisia. In addition to the discovered oil and gas fields, such as Sirte, Murzuq, Bouri, and Sabratha, there are still areas waiting to be explored.
As we have previously reported from Pentapostagma, steadfast in his neo-Ottoman vision, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan launched the research vessel Oruc Reis during a ceremony at the Bosphorus, accompanied by two frigates, a support vessel from the Turkish fleet, and three vessels from the Turkish Petroleum Corporation. It is heading toward Somalia, where, according to the agreement, Ankara will receive 30% of the revenues from the reserves it discovers.
Given that Somalia has granted Turkey control over its territorial waters for protection, we can now talk about the complete exploitation of this country by Turkey, which is becoming, in modern times, a fully controlled territory. This marks the first country that will effectively become a "possession" of a modern Turkish "Empire," rather than an Ottoman one.
"I know that you are embarking on a long journey, and on this long journey, you will be welcomed by our Somali brothers. I believe that we will take significant steps with our Somali brothers in both seismic research and drilling operations," said the Turkish president, among other statements.
The Oruc Reis and its accompanying fleet chose to traverse through the heart of the Aegean instead of taking the coastal route, demonstrating a show of strength.
A representative from Turkey's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources stated in a related propaganda video: "We continue to work for the prosperity of our country with programs that go beyond the Blue Homeland into the international arena."
