In the port of Tromsø in northern Norway, an imposing Norwegian frigate is sailing in the main Arctic waters. The event is an important reminder that the region's frigid environment could turn into one of the hottest on the planet as the West and Russia-China clash over who will dominate the Arctic, CNN reports.
Statements "Fire" Arctic Council
In a recent speech to the Arctic Council, Admiral Rob Bauer, head of NATO's military commission, said that "we cannot be naive and ignore the possible malicious intentions of some actors in the region."
"A new conflict could start at any time, even in the Arctic," Bauer added.
His message was not accidental. It is consistent with the new tactics of the West and Russia-China, a tactic which involves the militarization of the Arctic region with the ultimate goal of dominating it. The Arctic is rich in natural resources, which is why the world's major powers are prepared to fight over it. Whoever controls it has an undeniable strategic advantage.
Let us also remind you that a few hundred kilometres away from the Norwegian port of Tromso is the Kola Peninsula, where Moscow has the main base of its Northern Fleet. It is home to many ballistic missile submarines, warships, destroyers, frigates, troops, landing strips, etc.
Putin's threats against Finland
This week in a speech Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that there would be "problems between Moscow and Helsinki" now that Finland - a country in the Arctic - has joined the NATO alliance. Moscow will send more troops to its northern border, i.e. Finland's border, which Helsinki will see as a threat.
A few weeks ago we informed you that Finland had closed all border crossings with Russia, accusing Moscow of carrying out a "hybrid attack" involving the mass sending of migrants into the country.
China Invested 90 Million in the Arctic
If all of the above was not enough to convince you of the importance of the Arctic, we should inform you that expert estimates suggest that China has invested about 90 billion in the Arctic, following agreements made between Beijing and Moscow for joint exploitation of the region.
In conclusion, Russia and China are working together to exclude the West from the Arctic and suck alone all the valuable resources hidden on its icy surface.
