Bloodbath in the Snows of Sinkovka

More specifically, and according to a recent publication by the Russian defence SvPressa, Ukrainian reports suggest that Sinkovka (also called Sinkivka) has become an impregnable fortress for the Russian army, since Moscow's forces cannot cross the Oshkol (or Oskil) River.

According to the page, however, this is not the case and is propaganda.

A Ukrainian commander said on the TV airwaves that "Sinkovka is a small settlement, but it is of strategic importance. Fierce fighting continues to take place there. The Russian army will try to occupy Sinkovka by the end of the year. There have been reports in the past that the Russians have captured Sinkovka, but these reports do not correspond to reality. Our soldiers have not given a single house to the Russian army."

SvPressa reports that the Ukrainian commander's words are untrue, pointing out that even some Ukrainian cartographers painted part of Sinkovka in grey.

However, the situation is indeed difficult for both the Ukrainian and the Russian army in that area, the Russians have admitted this. Strong clashes are taking place in the direction of Kupiansk and Krasnolymansk, clashes which will determine who controls the local areas.

SvPressa reports that although the Russian army could theoretically launch a powerful attack to break through the Ukrainian defence lines and carry out a massive assault on Sinkovka, for the moment it is not doing so because it does not want to suffer heavy losses in terms of manpower.

By 20 December, however, information from the situation near Svatovo-Kupiansk reported that the Russian army had captured two strongholds on the eastern bank of the Oshkol River. Russian armed forces continue to this day to attack near Sinkovka and east of Petropavlovka. The Ukrainian army is trying to repair passages and transport hubs previously bombed by the Russians in order to restore the logistical support capabilities of its troops on the front.

Finally, reports suggest that relatively recently the Ukrainian army carried out a counterattack from the northern side of Sinkovka, but the Russians are said to have easily suppressed this attempt by using anti-tank missiles, anti-tank rocket launchers and other equipment against Kiev's scarce armour and infantry.
