Panic in Ukraine: Russians have begun using deadly chemical weapons in the south-Is it a retaliation for Kiev's cluster munitions?

Alexander Tarnawski, commander of the Ukrainian operational-strategic troop group Tavria, reported on 6 August 2023 that Russian troops used chemical munitions in the Novodanilovka region on 6 August.

As noted, the Russian military fired two artillery rounds from multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) with ammunition containing a chemical (most likely chloropicrin).

According to the Ukrainian defence website DefenseExpress now, the Russians carried out such a bombardment to prevent the advance of Kiev's troops. At the same time, the Ukrainians accuse the Russians of violating international regulations, which concern the ban on the use of ammunition with chemical substances.

According to Ukrainian reports, no soldiers or civilians were injured as a result of these Russian chemical weapons attacks.

The official Ukrainian statement did not reveal the exact type of multiple rocket launcher used by the Russians for the attack, nor the diameter of the projectiles fired. Another unknown detail of the incident is the origin of the ammunition. In other words, it is uncertain whether they came directly from Russian missile stocks or from the arsenal of another allied country, such as North Korea.

It should be emphasised that this is the first time that Russian forces have used such powerful weapons against Ukrainian soldiers. So far, the use of chemical weapons on the Ukrainian battlefield had not been reported before, except for some unconfirmed reports accusing the Russian army of using K-51 grenades with chemicals inside them. These grenades were reported to have been launched against Ukrainian positions by drones.

This tactic is particularly effective and deadly, as it does not allow the victim (the targeted soldier) to discern the threat. By the time he realizes what he is being targeted it is already too late. However, according to the Ukrainian defense page, firing chemical weapons from artillery systems is even more dangerous for the Kiev military. It goes without saying that in this way, the losses of the Ukrainian army can multiply much faster, making it a much more efficient method for the Russians.

The new news of the use of chemical weapons by the Russian army came at a time when Russian sources accuse Ukraine of extensive use of cluster munitions in various sectors of the front.

Cluster munitions are considered particularly dangerous weapons, as they have claimed the lives of many civilians. Perhaps the Russians chose to return fire with something equally dangerous, such as chloropicrin-dipped missiles.
