The Greek-Egyptian military cooperation is growing together with the joint energy projects of the two countries in the Eastern Mediterranean.
"On Wednesday, February 22, 2023, the "Greece-Egypt Military Cooperation Program (Military Cooperation Program)" (Military Cooperation Program) for the year 2023 was signed at the GEETHA by the Director of the Department of Strategy - Politics - Defense Planning and Capabilities of the GEETHA Brigadier General Nikolaos Holeva and Deputy Director of the Planning and Operations Branch of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Arab Republic of Egypt Brigadier General Mohamed Mohamed Tawfik Moawad.
The said PES includes 32 activities that will take place in both countries, 17 in Greece and 15 in Egypt, and concern among others:
● Participation in cross-branch exercises, as well as those of the individual branches of the Armed Forces.
● Co-trainings in Crisis Management, Electronic Warfare, as well as Search and Rescue.
● Joint training of Special Forces – Special Operations Forces.
● Staff exchange and visits to schools and multinational schools.
● Staff meetings and conversations on matters of mutual interest.
With the signing of the Program, the ever-upgrading Military Cooperation between the 2 Countries is confirmed, the ties of their Armed Forces are further strengthened and at the same time their interoperability is expanded, contributing to the strengthening of the role played by Greece and Egypt as pillars of stability and security in the wider region of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa", the announcement states.
The Egyptian military will participate in exercises like the one at the Xanthi shooting range, in cross-branch exercises, while cooperation in crisis scenarios is extremely important.
This is essentially a deepening of the military cooperation between two countries located in the Eastern Mediterranean area, in view of the new developments in the field of LNG transportation and the East Med pipeline.
We have mentioned that these projects, together with the electrical interconnection of Greece and Egypt, change all the data, because very simply all these projects require military guarding which will be achieved through military cooperation in all three branches of the Armed Forces of the two countries.
Common economic and energy interests combined with the implementation of projects such as the Greece-Egypt electrical interconnection bring a strong defense alliance against Turkish threats in the Mediterranean.
Across the Eastern Mediterranean region, since the establishment of offshore energy security operations has been decided upon, concern about these threats has also skyrocketed.
What is feasible, is the creation of a joint aeronautical force, considering the minimum naval capabilities of coastal states such as Egypt-Greece-Cyprus and Israel.
Turkey, after the project of connecting Greece and Cyprus with Israel and now with Egypt, will be faced with fait accompli, which "destroy" the Turkish-Libyan memorandum and the plans for sovereignty in the Eastern Mediterranean.
The continuous equipping of the Turkish armed forces with aircraft, ships or cruise missiles has removed some of the previous reservations of the governments of the countries of the region, for the creation of a defense arm that will effectively protect their grandiose plans in the region.
Also today, no real defense mechanisms have been put in place to deal with small drones, which are used by the armed forces of countries in the region as well as terrorists.
