According to Reuters and information from other foreign news media, a U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed today, Monday, December 11, 2023, in South Korea during a routine training flight.

The pilot was rescued shortly after he ejected from the aircraft, the U.S. Air Force unit based at the Pentagon base in South Korea said.

The US pilot was rescued in the Yellow Sea by the South Korean coast guard, which returned him to Kunsan military air base shortly afterwards, the US Air Force's 8th Fighter Squadron explained in its official statement.

Authorities are still investigating the exact causes of the accident, which led to the pilot's emergency ejection and shortly afterwards to the crash of the US aircraft in the area.

As far as the area is concerned, we should mention that the Yellow Sea is located in the western Pacific Ocean, specifically between the Chinese mainland and the Korean peninsula. Because of its geographical location, the Yellow Sea is considered the northwesternmost part of the East China Sea. It is also very close to North Korea, which is why, as of November 2018, the area is considered a "peace zone" between the two Korean states.

Returning to the F-16 incident, the commander of the US unit in South Korea, Colonel Matthew Gaetke, said he was grateful for the rescue of the pilot and his state of health.

The air base is located in the coastal city of Gunsan on the west coast of South Korea and is one of the two main US Air Force air bases in the country.

The incident of the crash of the US F-16 fighter jet is important because it took place within a stone's throw of China and North Korea, which demonstrates how dangerous it is for US military elements to operate so close to hostile countries.

At the same time, we should point out that this month a US Air Force V-22 Osprey transport tiltrotor aircraft also crashed off the coast of Japan, leading the Pentagon to order the grounding of all such aircraft.
