Snezhinsk is a close Russian city, that is a center of nuclear weapons development! Today, only two nuclear centers exist in the country. The main one is located in Savor, where they produce the majority of Russian nuclear technology.
The city was built around a scientific research institute that developed nuclear weapons. The institute was established in 1955 and almost 30% of its scientists came from the Savor center.
Some of the weapons that were designed and tested in Snezhinsk are underwater nuclear missiles, nuclear deep charges, cruise and interceptor missiles, the A-135 anti-ballistic missile system, and more.
From 1957, Snezhinsk became an -almost- ordinary city. Although, during the Soviet times, the city was nowhere in maps and data. Even flights over the city had been banned. Only in 1992, the city was revealed to the world!
In 2011, Snezhinsk had a population of 50,619 people, 11,000 of them were working in the institute.
Every person that lives in the city must follow very strict rules to ensure the protection of their development. Until the '50s, people who worked in the institute couldn't leave the city. Later, they could leave to specific cities in special buses!
Last, let us inform you that the 374 square kilometers town is always guarded by armed soldiers of the Russian Defense Ministry and systems. Especially before 1992, it was impossible to enter Snezhinsk… At least alive!
