In 2015, Israel ordered four Sa'ar 6 corvettes from Germany. The boats have been based on the German Braunschweig but with a few changes to cover Israel's needs. So, the Sa'ar 6 class is specially designed for Israel. The first ship of the class was delivered in 2020. Today, the ships are the most heavily armed of the Israel Navy and operate next to the Sa'ar 5 class corvettes.
But, Sa'ar 6 is bigger, has reduced radar-cross section, and carries much more weapons than the Sa'ar 5 class.
Weaponry
First of all, part of their armament is an OTO Melara 76mm naval gun, that can be used against a variety of targets. There are also two Typhoon remotely-controlled weapon stations with one 20mm cannon each.
Anti-ship protection is being provided by the Gabriel Mk. V anti-ship missiles. 16 units are being carried by each ship.
The boats feature the 20-cell defense missile system C-Dome which is a naval version of the Iron Dome and uses the Tamir interceptor missiles.
Last, the six Sa'ar 6 ships have two 324mm torpedo launchers for anti-submarine conflicts.
Every corvette has a 26 knots top speed and works with two propels and the CODAD propulsion system.
The cost per unit is almost 400 million dollars.
