A few days after Iran's threatening message promising retaliation for the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, a White House official stated that the U.S. has indications that Iran is preparing to launch an immediate missile attack against Israel. At the same time, Washington warns of the need to avoid a full-scale war in the Middle East and has sent a message to Tehran urging it not to take escalatory actions.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani conveyed the country's intention to leave no "criminal acts" by Israel unanswered during a weekly press briefing. He referred to the Israeli attack that killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and the deputy commander of the Revolutionary Guards in Lebanon, Abbas Nilforushan.
"We maintain a firm stance and will act in a way that makes the enemy regret,” he said, adding that Iran does not seek war but is not afraid of it.
The spokesman also stated that Iran is monitoring developments with the Lebanese authorities.
The assassination of Hassan Nasrallah has sparked outrage in Iran, with Ali Khamenei warning recently that Israel will bitterly regret its actions and calling on the entire Muslim world to unite and stand with Hezbollah and the Lebanese people.
In his first statement following the Israeli military's announcements, Iran's supreme leader Ali Khamenei expressed the belief that the assassination of Nasrallah would not cause a significant rift in Hezbollah's structure.
“The Zionist criminals must know that they are very small and cannot inflict significant damage on the strong structure of Hezbollah in Lebanon. All resistance forces in the region stand by Hezbollah,” said the Iranian leader, adding, “The fate of this region will be decided by the resistance forces, led by Hezbollah... Lebanon will make the evil and outcast invader regret its actions.”
He further emphasized that “the ruling terrorist gang of the Zionist regime has not learned from the criminal war that has been ongoing for a year in Gaza.”
He concluded, “All Muslims must stand by the Lebanese people and Hezbollah, who are proud of their capabilities, and help confront the usurping, unjust, and malevolent regime.”
Politico: The real target of Israel is Iran and the restructuring of the entire Middle East.
According to Politico, for Iran, this is not just a theatrical maneuver by Netanyahu, but a reminder that Israel is not merely fighting Tehran by crushing its allies—such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen—but also demonstrating its superiority in both technology and espionage on Iranian soil.
In April, immediately following a barrage of missile launches from Iran that did not cause significant damage, Israel retaliated by blowing up an air defense radar near the central city of Isfahan, in a move widely regarded as a warning that it could neutralize, if it wanted, Iran's nuclear facilities.
In July, the leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed by a missile launched at a guesthouse in Tehran. Top Iranian commanders lost their lives in strikes in Damascus and Beirut. Netanyahu's messages regarding Israel's "reach" are clear, limiting Iran's maneuvering space.
This situation poses a significant problem for Tehran's leadership, which is trying to present itself as the military counterbalance that can support its "proxies" throughout Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen, as Israel calls this image into question, highlighted by the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.
US Sends Thousands of Troops to the Middle East, Says Pentagon
The US is sending thousands of troops to the Middle East, as announced by the American Pentagon, in order to enhance security and defend Israel if necessary.
Squadrons of fighter jets and their personnel will bolster their presence in the region, a Pentagon representative stated.
US Message to Iran: We Are Determined to Prevent the Expansion of Conflict
The US responded immediately following Iran's threatening messages and warnings, which stated after the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah that Israel would pay a heavy price.
"The United States is determined to prevent Iran and its Iranian-backed partners and proxies from exploiting the situation or expanding the conflict," US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin emphasized after talks with his Israeli counterpart.
"I spoke twice yesterday with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant about the events in Lebanon. I expressed my full support for Israel's right to defend itself and its people against terrorist groups supported by Iran. I stressed that the United States is determined to prevent Iran and its Iranian-backed partners and proxies from exploiting the situation or expanding the conflict. I made it clear that the United States remains prepared to protect US forces and facilities in the region and is committed to defending Israel," Austin noted in a post on platform X.
