Two drones were observed before two explosions occurred within 5 nautical miles of a ship
Iran's Houthi allies in Yemen have escalated attacks on ships in the Red Sea in response to Israel's war in Gaza.
Explosions in the Red Sea, off the coast of Yemen, were reported today (Tuesday) after drones and missiles were seen in two separate incidents, a British maritime authority said.
Two drones were observed before two explosions occurred within 5 nautical miles of a ship sailing 50 nautical miles west of Hodeidah on the west coast of Yemen, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Office (UKMTO) has announced.
In another incident, an explosion was heard and missiles were seen within 4 nautical miles of a ship 60 nautical miles from Hodeidah, according to the authority. Another explosion was reported to have occurred 0.5 nautical miles from the same ship, according to the same source.
It is currently unclear whether the incidents involved the same ship, which the authority did not name. Details of the cargo or an indication of where the ship or ships were heading or where they had sailed from were also not given.
In both incidents the ship and crew are safe, according to the same source.
The British authority did not make known where the drones or missiles came from and there is currently no claim of responsibility.
Today Tuesday, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galland hinted that his country was retaliating against Iraq, Yemen and Iran for attacks on it as the war with Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip spreads to other parts of the region.
"We are in a war on many fronts and we are being attacked from seven theatres: Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, Iraq, Yemen and Iran. We have already responded and taken action in six of these theatres," he told MPs.
The US hit Tehran-backed militias in Iraq in retaliation
"US forces carried out strikes on Monday targeting Iranian-backed militias in Iraq in response to a drone attack that wounded three members of US forces," International Media reported, noting:
"The US strikes were directed at three locations used by Qatab Hezbollah and affiliated groups, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement.
"These precision strikes are in response to a series of attacks against U.S. personnel in Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militias, including an attack by Iranian-linked 'Kataib Hezbollah' and affiliated groups on Erbil Air Base earlier today, and are intended to disrupt and degrade the capabilities of Iranian-aligned militia groups directly responsible."
A headache for the U.S. "Qatab Hezbollah"
National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said Qatabe Hezbollah, as part of an Iranian-backed militant group, claimed responsibility for Monday's attack and that one of the US forces was seriously wounded.
U.S. and coalition forces have been operating in the region as part of the mission to counter the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.
Those forces have been repeatedly attacked by Iranian-backed proxies, with about 100 attacks since Israel launched its offensive to eliminate the militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The U.S. military has said it has intercepted most of those attacks or failed to hit their targets without causing damage. However other attacks such as the one on Monday have injured US military personnel.
Previous retaliatory strikes have targeted Qatabe Hezbollah and other groups, including U.S. raids in November.
Action brings reaction
From the above we understand that action brings reaction, with the spiral of violence in the Middle East being endless.
Our assessment is that if Israel continues to surgically kill senior Iranian military officials in Syria and Lebanon, the risk of the Gaza war spilling over into the Middle East will be very likely.
