The US State Department is considering the possibility of Azerbaijan invading southern Armenia soon, specifically in the coming weeks. This was stated by the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, warning a group of US lawmakers.
In a telephone conversation on October 3, members of the US Congress pressed Blinken on possible measures that could be taken against Aliyev in response to Azerbaijan's invasion of Artsakh in September.
The news was first reported by Politico, citing two people as sources.
Blinken told lawmakers that the State Department was looking for ways to hold Azerbaijan accountable for its actions. One step, according to Politico, was to ban military support to Azerbaijan.
Blinken sounded confident about ongoing diplomatic talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan while speaking to Democratic lawmakers, including Nancy Pelosi and Anna Eschoo of California.
Pelosi and Eshoo last week called for US sanctions against Azerbaijan, the Armenian National Committee of Americans reported on October 3.
In the attached letter from Eshoo and Pelosi to US President Joe Biden, a bipartisan group of lawmakers called the Azerbaijan operation an "unprovoked military attack" while also condemning the "inhumane month-long blockade" of Artsakh, which left Armenians with no choice but to to "leave their land, fearing a future under the extreme authoritarian rule of Azerbaijan".
"It is clear that our country's response to this crisis was not commensurate with the destruction that occurred. We believe the United States must make clear to Azerbaijan that its unprovoked aggression against Artsakh is unacceptable and will be met with an appropriate response," the congressmen wrote in their letter.
Whatever the headline of the articles on the above news is, it speaks for itself: "Blinken warns Congress that Azerbaijan may invade Armenia in the coming weeks."
At the same time, it is currently being discussed to take place in Azerbaijan some parts of the joint tactical exercises that the Turkish army will carry out celebrating the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey.
The exercises will take place between October 23 and 25 and it is reported that they will involve units of the ground forces and artillery of Turkey.
