The US will be prepared to send troops to Israel in case of war with Iran.
The US House of Representatives will develop a bill for the use of the US military in Israel in case the military conflict with Hamas escalates into a larger war with Iran.
Michael McCall, head of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told CNN.
"I hope I never have to mark up this bill," Texas Senator Michael McCall told CNN on Monday, adding that senators are already drafting the bill "just in case it's necessary."
"But we have a situation in the Middle East that is growing more tense by the day, and if Hezbollah gets involved, Iran has already threatened we're going to have a regional war," he said.
Since the Palestinian group Hamas launched a coordinated land, sea and air attack from the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, Israel has carried out an extensive campaign of airstrikes on the ground.
Hamas in turn fired rockets and missiles across Israel and is believed to still be holding Israeli hostages in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
The head of the US Central Command arrived in Israel
The head of the US Central Command arrived in Israel on Monday to meet with the country's chief of staff, according to a statement from the US Central Command.
U.S. Gen. M. Kurila's goal is to better understand Israel's defense requirements and to outline U.S. support during the conflict, the statement said.
U.S. Central Command did not say how long the U.S. general would stay in Israel.
His visit comes as U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is conducting a diplomatic marathon in the region, including a nearly eight-hour meeting with Israel's war cabinet.
Diplomatic efforts to address the crisis are intensifying, with US President Joe Biden also scheduled to visit Israel on Wednesday.
