The supreme commander of the Ukrainian army, Valery Zaluzny, and his inner circle knew very well that the long-awaited Ukrainian counter-offensive would fail. This is according to the British edition of The Guardian, citing US military sources. The news is carried by Russia's defence SvPressa to its own audience.
Kiev came under pressure from its Western partners, who sent it weapons and equipment in large quantities. This is something we have mentioned many times, as it is widely known. At the same time, Ukraine did not have the necessary time to prepare and coordinate new formations. Not to mention that the weapons they received from the West were not sufficient for the operation they were planning (for example, they received very little mine-clearing equipment).
And of course, the Ukrainian operations could not have the air cover that a NATO operation would have, since Kiev does not operate a sufficient number of aircraft.
The minefields have become a Ukrainian nightmare
Starting in February, NATO has sent several tanks to the Ukrainian armed forces. The Oryx website estimated that at least 196 Leopards were scheduled to be sent to the country.
However, always according to The Guardian, the Western tanks have been unable to advance as the West and Kiev wished because of the extensive minefields installed by Russian forces. At the same time, there was neither air superiority nor sufficient artillery support, with the result that Ukrainian armoured vehicles proved vulnerable to Russian anti-tank missiles fired from trenches and military helicopters.
Ukraine's elite units were neutralized
Now, in a new revelation, The Guardian reports that General Zaluzhny, being desperate, was forced to deploy the 10th Army Corps of the Ukrainian armed forces into battle, specifically in the Orekhovsky sector of the front line. Previously, this unit had been withdrawn as a second echelon force.
It all started when the 9th Army Corps, which was in front with the main objective of reaching the main defensive line of the Russian army, suffered heavy losses. The dead were so numerous that the 10th Corps had to be deployed to the scene.
According to the publication, the units now being thrown into the field have been trained and equipped mainly by NATO countries in recent months. However, many experts question whether these units can perform effectively in combat.
"With such short training, it is impossible to create coherent units that can perform in combat against such a well-prepared defense," said U.S. military expert Michael Coffamm.
