As we informed you this morning, Russian warships in the Russian port of Novorossiysk in the Black Sea were attacked once again by Ukrainian unmanned surface vessels.
Just Before the Sinking!
In newer news from the scene, countless Twitter posts show a Russian warship has capsized in the waters of the Novorossiysk port as a result of a Ukrainian drone strike.
According to the descriptions of the published materials, it is a Russian Popucha class landing ship.
The Soviet and later Russian Project 775, called the Popucha class by NATO, is a class of landing craft that were built in Poland for the Soviet Navy. Under Soviet times, these ships were considered to be in the large landing ship class.
Although several ships of the class have been withdrawn from active service, some landing ships remain in service. The first ship of the Popucha class entered service in 1974.
Returning to today's attack on the Novorossiysk port, a striking video released a short while ago shows a frame-by-frame shot of the ship being hit by a Ukrainian surface drone.
As a result of the damage to the Russian landing craft, users on social media were quick to describe the Ukrainian USV operation as a success.
As for Novorossiysk, it is a city in the Russian region of Krasnodar. This city is home to one of the largest ports on the Black Sea, and the area is also home to the base of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The Popucha class landing ship that was struck is part of this Russian fleet.
Russian support vessels can be seen next to the ship trying to rescue the landing craft and prevent it from sinking.
Although official reports have not commented on anything about the incident, it is likely that the unconfirmed reports that a Ukrainian drone hit the Russian vessel are true. Apparently the Russians rushed to rescue the ship, but were unable to prevent the current situation.
In one of the newest videos posted on Twitter, it appears that the Popucha-class landing craft has tilted dangerously too far. It is a few metres before water floods its decks. If we reach this point then the Ukrainian forces will celebrate the sinking of another Russian warship and in particular a large Russian landing craft.
Of course, we should add that a video was published showing Russian fire destroying a Ukrainian drone before it could hit its target. It appears that the Ukrainian attack involved several such USVs.
