Cold War was the latest period when military industries produced weapons rapidly. During this time, a lot of capable weapons were produced in large numbers. Let's see the five most capable fighters at air-to-air combat during the War!
F-14D Tomcat
We started with an American one, Tomcat hadn't enough time to prove itself in the air as it started serving ony 7 months before the Desolussion of the Soviet Union. Modern engines of the aircraft made it agile and its new radar gave it the ability to track targets in a distance of 740km. With the AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, the aircraft was almost unbeaten!
MiG-31B Foxhound
The fighter was the first Soviet jet of the fourth generation. The powerful Zaslon radar was the only of its kind for many years. Its sensors and its engagement range were superior to any US fighter. The newer R-33 long-range air-to-air missiles completed the package of a deadly fighter!
Su-27 Flanker
Another Sovietic masterpiece, Su-27 is considered by many as the bets figher of the Soviet Union. The aircraft was deisghned specifically to superpass the American F-15C Eagles. The third 4th generation jet of the Union featured the advanced Phazotron radar and the deadly R-27 and R-73 air-to-air missiles. Of course, the US didn't want to fight with Su-27...
F-15C Eagle
Probably the best fighter of the USA during the majority of the Cold War, F-15C was agile, featured advanced sensors, long-range, and could fly in high altitudes. Eagle could fly at the impressive speed of Mach 2.5, a feature that was required to catch the Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat that could fly at Mach 3!
MiG-25PD Foxbat
Although, the specific fighter was considered third generation, it had capabilities greater than other aircraft of this generation. Until today, Foxbat is the faster combatant aircraft ever flew, with a top speed of over Mach 3.3. The aircraft could fly at altitude of 38km. The R-40 air-to-air missiles were pretty deadly too. Reports say that the aircraft shot down Western fighters by Iraqi and Syrian operators.
