The war in Ukraine and the use of formidable unmanned surface vessels (USVs) has dealt a terrible blow to warships of all classes in the Black Sea, and has truly changed so-called naval warfare.
Likening their action to the legendary Greek fireballs during the fight of 1821, the unmanned vessels are or will be in 2 years the hidden weapon of the Greek Navy in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.
Regardless of what the Turkish side does, in our country we have a revolution in the field of unmanned systems, while we know the Aegean inside and out, clearly having an advantage in any future naval crisis.
One of the new achievements is the USV ARGO
The present research project focuses on the development of an integrated unmanned floating surface system with significant technological innovations.
in order to find reliable and economically viable alternatives to the problem of collecting reliable, fast and easily accessible data on the aquatic environment.
The system to be developed has customized "intelligent systems" of data collection and reading based on the combined use of sensors and ground control systems for remote control and management.
The system presents notable innovations in the following areas:
i. on-board / real-time data processing / analysis capabilities ii. an energy independent and environmentally friendly platform (vessel) built entirely from the latest aeronautical
iii. the development of advanced technology sensors (photogrammetric and radiometric fingerprinting, as well as its connection to pollutants, indicators and inertial sensors) and
iv. the information management software, which is the biggest innovation of the system, as for the first time it imports and spatially maps the environmental variables recorded by its sensors, thus making it possible to manage data from
Geographical Systems (GIS) information from local or
remote users.
Standard Greek Autonomous Unmanned Floating System USV ARGO
The Marine Remote Sensing Research Group (MRSG) of the Department of Oceanography and Marine Life Sciences of the University of the Aegean participates in the research project "Prototype Greek Autonomous Unmanned Floating System USV ARGO".
The project is implemented within the framework of the Single Action of State Aid for research projects RESEARCH - CREATE - INNOVATE.
This research project refers to the partnership of 4 Companies and 2 Research Institutions whose ultimate goal is to combine the experiences and knowledge of all agencies in providing research for the collection and analysis of data and information related to the aquatic environment.
The research project of the partnership refers to industrial research actions for the protection of the marine environment, and aims to develop sustainable and economic solutions to the problem of monitoring the aquatic environment and is fully identified with the needs of the blue economy for sustainable and sustainable development.
Until now, the conventional methods of monitoring, recording and collecting data using specially equipped Oceanographic vessels or coastal shipping vessels, with diving expeditions, sampling, or static measuring stations are limited and present significant shortcomings, such as their inability to operate in extreme weather conditions and mainly their extremely high manning and maintenance costs.
Purpose of the project
The present research project has as its object the development of an integrated unmanned floating system with significant technological innovations and the ultimate goal of finding reliable and economically viable alternative methods to the problem of collecting reliable, fast, easily accessible data related to the aquatic environment.
The system to be developed has custom "intelligent systems" of data logging and reading overview based on the combined use of sensors and ground control systems to enable its remote operation and management. The system presents notable innovations in the following areas:
1. in the possibility of on-board - real time data processing / analysis,
2. in the energy autonomous and environmentally friendly platform (vessel) entirely made of the most modern aeronautical materials,
3. in the development of advanced technology sensors, specially designed for aquatic environments (photogrammetric and radiometric mapping of the seabed, as well as its connection with sensors of pollutants, indicators and inertial system) and
4. in the information management software, which is also the great innovation of the system, as for the first time it interpolates and captures spatially and not pointwise, as has been done until now, the environmental variables recorded by its sensors, thus making possible the management of data from Geographical Systems Information (GIS) from local or remote users.
The proposed research project using "smart" unmanned floating systems aims to develop new methods of monitoring, recording, collecting and analyzing data from the aquatic environment, with main advantages:
1. cost reduction - avoiding the purchase or leasing and equipment of large conventional vessels for a specific mission, development of a network of fixed measuring stations or better and more efficient utilization of existing ones,
2. the rational allocation of resources and the utilization of human resources with a reduction of risk in recording (use of divers, etc.),
3. the possibility of Real time monitoring,
4. the assurance of "interdisciplinary" and e) the immediacy in the interconnection of bodies - Academic / Research bodies and the Private sector.
For the successful implementation of the project, four SME companies are participating, the company UCANDRONE, with enormous expertise in Unmanned technologies and remote sensing, the company AMBIO, with experience in the field of Aquaculture and Fisheries, Marine Spatial Planning, the company FIBLE with many years of professional and research experience experience in the field of IT, the company REMAKO SA, Business Consultants and two research groups from two important research institutions of the country, the University of the Aegean (Department of Oceanography and Marine Life Sciences) and the Hellenic Center for Marine Research.
