Military vessels have been highly improved in recent years. Except for their weaponry and their systems, their design now features better armor composed of reliable materials.
With their modern design and their reliable structure, can modern warships operate as icebreakers?
The short answer is of course no! The military vessels may have been developed in recent years, but icebergs have been developed too. In the images, you can check one of the most recent icebreakers of the Coastal Guard of the US. The design of its hull is different from any other warship.
The vessel first rides up on the ice and then cuts through it. Its materials and its structure in general are specially built in order for the ship to operate in freezing conditions.
This design is a standard for modern icebreakers, with origin from Canada.
To give a complete answer, if a military vessel tries to work as an icebreaker, the results would probably be tragic…
