Greece did not submit a maritime spatial plan to the EU, which would have allowed us to declare our rocky islets to the EU, and as a result we were fined.
The big question here is why we did not make an official submission that would have given European "certification" to the Greek map, especially as far as micro-islands and rocky islets are concerned, causing of course the wrath of the Turks, but that is their problem and not ours?
The reason why our country is typically late in fulfilling its obligations towards the EU for the implementation of the EU directive on Marine Spatial Planning is causing anger.
It is certainly about not bad-mouthing the Erdogan regime, and the Commission has even announced that it is referring Greece to the European Court of Justice on this matter.
The Maritime Spatial Planning, especially for Greece, is not a simple technical process, but has a profound political content, as it will have to include the maritime zones of Greece and of course all the island formations, islands and islets.
It is a major challenge for Greece to draw up the maritime spatial plan, limiting and accepting the range of territorial waters to 6 nautical miles, while it is a given that it will include in this plan, which will also have the European seal, all the islands and islets of the Aegean, many of which are disputed by Turkey.
