Turkey: The area between Lesvos and Chios is under our jurisdiction for SAR and partly within Turkish territorial waters

Turkey has directly questioned the Greek jurisdiction to conduct Search and Rescue operations between Lesvos and Chios, in response to the NOTAM A4277/23 issued by Greece for the detection and rescue of people in the sea area between the two large islands of the East Aegean.

Turkey issued the NOTAM A9002/23 in which it explicitly states that the area in question is within the area of Turkish jurisdiction and partly in Turkish territorial waters!!!

Just 10 days before the Mitsotakis-Erdoğan meeting in Athens in the framework of the High Cooperation Council between Greece and Turkey and Ankara clearly shows that it has not changed its revisionist doctrine.

Thus, apart from the partition of the Aegean Sea with an illegal NOTAM that binds five areas from north to south for a Search and Rescue and environmental protection exercise until 19 December, on the occasion of a Greek naval exercise at the end of November, it raises the issue of the demilitarization of the islands of Samos, Kalymnos, Kos and Nisyros, both with an illegal directive to pilots (NOTAM) and for Ikaria specifically with a directive to sailors (NAVTEX).

A few days before his arrival in Athens, the Turkish President spoke as a protector of the oppressed everywhere and indirectly referred to the era of the Ottoman Empire, glorifying it, saying, "Of course, as a nation, we will not turn our backs on the oppressed and victimized geographies in this period. If we care about the Balkans, the Caucasus and our compatriots in the Turkish world, we will also be concerned about the suffering of our brothers and sisters from Gaza who have died under Israel's brutal attacks since October 7. Turkey means a safe home in difficult times. It is the Turk who is missing and is being watched over. "He is remembered with kindness and longing wherever his footsteps are."

In the context of neo-Ottomanism, the Turkish Ministry of Defence advertised with a relevant post on social media an exercise of its frigate off Libya, in the country where Greece has not been able to complete even a single humanitarian mission, with loss of human lives.

At the same time, however, both Nikos Dendias from the Xanthi firing range on Friday and George Gerapetritis, speaking today on CNBC, sent a message against revisionism.

"We must remain firm in our basic understanding that revisionism has no place in the modern world and that we must apply common standards in all conflicts," the Greek Foreign Minister said.
