New Turkish provocations with the construction of fortifications in Cyprus while in Athens stay idle

Turkey continues to try to change the status quo in Cyprus. After its actions in the buffer zone in Pyla, Agios Dometios and elsewhere, in the last few days the occupying army has been proceeding with the construction of fortifications in the Deneia area.

According to Cypriot media reports, according to the community leader of Deneia, Christakis Panagiotou, Turkish troops have started works on the borders of the buffer zone on the occupied side. Panagiotou said that the occupying army seems to have proceeded with the construction of an anti-tank trench which is estimated to be four to five meters wide and 3-4 days deep.

All measures are being taken on the part of the Republic of Cyprus so that the sense of security of the residents of the areas adjacent to the buffer zone is not affected to any extent, President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said this afternoon, referring to the Turkish provocations in Deneia.

In his statements to journalists, coming to the Cyprus University of Technology in Limassol, invited to refer to the new Turkish provocations in Deneia, where trenches are being opened, and asked how the Republic of Cyprus will react, the President of the Republic of Cyprus said: "I have been immediately informed of the Turkish action, I expect a note to be submitted tonight.

I have spoken to the President of the Community myself, I have contacted him to be informed. It is indeed about works of the occupation forces outside the buffer zone. It is something about which we will take all necessary action both in the United Nations and in the European Union.

We see this increasing trend on the part of the Turkish occupying forces, and it was for this reason that I addressed the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

What I conveyed to the President of the Community and what I would like to mention in my statements is that all measures are being taken on the part of the Republic of Cyprus so that the sense of security of the inhabitants of the areas adjacent to the buffer zone is not affected to any extent. It is something, I repeat, that we are constantly monitoring.

Asked whether the present challenge had been included in his letter to the UN Secretary General, the President replied. Such moves are often made in Deneia within the buffer zone. I repeat, this one is outside the buffer zone, but it is reprehensible because it affects the situation in general.

Asked if the government has contacted the UN on this issue, the President replied, "Of course, both the UN and the EU and third countries that can help us deal with this situation."

Asked what we can expect from the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and from the UN Secretary General's envoy, given the provocativeness on the part of the occupying regime, the President of the Republic said: "I fully understand your question and certainly such actions do not help towards the resumption of talks.

At the same time, however, they prove that the current status quo, which is unacceptable, is not static, unacceptable new fait accompli are constantly being created, which further distances the prospect of a Cyprus settlement. So I am aware of the difficulties, the challenges, I understand them perfectly, but at the same time the only solution to all these problems that have been arising for 50 years from the continued occupation is the resolution of the Cyprus problem. And it is for this reason that, without disregarding the difficulties, we welcome the appointment (of the UN Secretary General's envoy), we look forward to her visiting Cyprus as soon as possible, so that we can see how the prospects for the resumption of talks are being created."

It will be recalled that on 29 December a Turkish armoured boat unloaded heavy self-propelled guns and large quantities of 155 mm shells in occupied Famagusta
