A large concentration of forces is being observed in the Mediterranean, as NATO and Russia are on the verge of a new cold war confrontation, which has been further escalated by the war events and the involvement of both in Ukraine.
As soon as the Italian High Command became aware of the Russian movements, Admiral Aurelio De Carolis, mobilized the nearest surface units at his disposal, which were engaged in the European mechanism of Operation "Peace", under NATO.
What is currently happening with Russian warships and submarines
Information indicates that the Russians are reactivating in the Eastern Mediterranean, both because of Libya and the energy plans of American companies in the same region, in Greece, Egypt and Israel.
Intervention by the Italian A/GEN means an alarm to NATO
According to the Italian press (.ilfattoquotidiano.it), the Italian A/GEN mentioned “the immediate security implications of the war in Ukraine.
"We have developments at sea once again and this concerns the dramatic increase in the number of the Russian fleet in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea to a level not seen even in the Cold War era."
This was stated by the Italian Chief of Naval Staff, Enrico Credentino, during the hearing in the Parliament's Defense Committee.
"The number of Russian surface combat units in the Mediterranean has increased, and we are talking about a high number that does not pose a threat to the Italian national territory, but significantly increases the tension.
The Russians have an aggressive attitude that was not common in the Mediterranean and was previously only evident in the Baltic. The risk of an accident is possible and when there is such an accident you never know where it could end up," he concludes.
Reports of greatly increased Russian naval activity in the Mediterranean are mounting and paint a picture of Russian maneuvering and activity in the Eastern Mediterranean based on a specific scenario of tracking and "targeting" NATO forces in the region.
We remind you that the backbone of the Russian armada remains in the Mediterranean, in case of any possible conflict with the side of the United States and NATO.
If the escalation in Ukraine suddenly led to an attempted Western intervention, then Western warships would not be able to enter the Black Sea so easily, since they would first have to deal with the Russian fleet and aircraft from the Tartus and Khmeimim bases.
In such a battle, the West would have superior forces, but the price of any success for NATO would be too high, given the scale of operations that would be required in any scenario with Russian forces in the region.
The purpose of the Russians, however, from their movements, is to prevent NATO from entering the Straits of Otranto and the Bosphorus with warships.
Thus, the presence of the Russian naval forces in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean has the main mission of preventing NATO aircraft carriers from being near the Bosphorus, especially in Alexandroupoli, using missiles from Russian cruisers and submarines, which the alliance does not it is going to allow each scenario.
