The QBZ-191, which was revealed for the first time in China in 2019, was built to replace the QBZ-92 (the one that is used by the Chinese army and Marines). The development program probably started in 2014 or may even earlier. In 2017 reports talked about the possible ending of its development and testing of the gun from Chinese troops. The gun serves the Chinese army since 2019 kai eventually it will fully replace the QBZ-95, and it will become the main infantry gun of the country.
Design
The new assault rifle of the country has a conventional design. Any bullpup configurations were rejected as these types of guns have limited ergonomics and limitations in other ways too. Externally the weapons are similar to the American Bushmaster ACR assault rifle. However, the Chinese weapon has different ammunition and other changes. The gun is available in different barrel sizes. The different configurations of the weapon are based on the same main design but with changeable parts. In this way, the cost, logistics, usage, and maintenance are all reduced, and meanwhile, the effectiveness is being improved. Although, it’s unknown if the weapon can change between two of its configurations.
Amunition
The new assault rifle fires the Chinese 5.8x42 mm ammunition. Similar rounds are being used by the QBZ-95 and the QBZ-03. The ammunition DBP-87 are developed at the end of the ‘80s to replace the Soviet 7.62x39 mm. They are lighter, feature improved ballistics, and have similar characteristics with the 5.56x42 mm NATO ammunition and the Soviet 5.45x39 mm. Reports state that the Chinese are even better compared to the other two. Many Chinese guns like the QBZ-191, the QBZ-95, The QJZ-191 light machine gun, and the QBU-88 sniper rifle uses this type of ammunition. Lately, a new version of this ammunition was developed with the name DBP-191. The newer rounds feature improved ballistics for targets of medium to extended range.
The ergonomics of the weapon are improved a lot compared to the QBZ-95. In the newer assault rifle, there is a button for ambidextrous mode, that is activated easily and fast. It is reported that QBZ-191 performs better than its predecessor in harsh circumstances and environments.
Sights and Magazines
The assault rifle has a standard magazine of 30 rounds. It is a new development with polymer and specially designed texture for better grip. Essentially, the magazine is a Chinese copy of the Magpul magazine. In the gun, there is an indication that informs the operator about the remaining ammunition.
The QBZ-191 can take a variety of different sights, as it features a full-size Picatinny type rail. The assault rifle can use the 3x QMK-152 magnification sight and the 1x IQ5118 thermal view sight. Of course, there are iron flip-up sights available for the weapon. Last but not least, the gun has an effective range of 400 meters (1312 feet).
