Everything you need to know about the prominent Soviet destroyers Udaloy

Udaloy I class (or Program 155 Fregat) were large anti-submarine vessels. Their project started in 1972 and by 1982, two ships were delivered. Udaloy I class was based on the Krikav class, while ships were designed for anti-submarine operations of long-range. They were also capable to support land missions. The class ultimately included 12 ships, 7 of them are still active for the Russian Navy.

Udaloy I is equipped with two quadruple launchers for the Rastrub missiles. There is a special deck for two Ka-27PL anti-submarine helicopters. The vessel also features an active/passive search and attack Polinom sonar. For air defense, the vessels have eight 6-rounds vertical launchers for the Klinok missiles. 64 Klinok missiles can be carrier aboard. The ammunition can hit targets in a distance of 12km and at altitudes between 3 and 12,192m.

Only one Udaloy II vessel was built and started serving in 1995. Its design was planned to provide wider capabilities to the vessels. The ship had two quadruple P-270 Moskit anti-ship missiles rather than the Rastrub ones. For defense purposes, two Kortik missiles/gun systems were added, each of them had two 30mm 6-barrels and eight 9M87/9M88 surface-to-air missiles. A new 130mm dual-purpose gun was located in the ship for anti-submarine purposes along with the Viyoga missiles (Starfish). Two more ships were planned to built, but ultimately, only the Admiral Chabanenko was built and added to the Northern Fleet.
