Ilyushin II-112 is a new Russian transport aircraft, that was built as the successor of the An-26 and the An-72. The first prototype was built in 2018 and the tests started the same year. The first flight happened in 2018 and in 2021, the only prototype crashed during a test flight.
Reports state that fire appeared in one of the engines and as the result control of the aircraft was lost, and it crashed. Every one of the 3 members of the crew died in the crash. Until then, Ilyushin II-112 had performed 12 test flights. Experts stated that the aircraft had many design issues. For example, its weight was almost 3-5t more than the allowed.
This amount reaches the maximum payload of the aircraft! That means the prototype couldn't carry really heavy cargo. The second prototype was planned to weight 2t less. Although, such thing is hard to be achieved. The whole accident shows that the Russian Ilyushin Design Bureau doesn't design such reliable aircraft as in its past. In terms of performance, the Ilyushin II-112 is inferior to the An-26, the transport aircraft that it was planned to replace. The production of the aircraft is still years away.
