The new Chinese J-31 stealth aircraft was developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) and is also called FC-31. The development of the aircraft started around 2008. Some sources state that in 2007, China stole designs and other data about the F-35. This information was used to make the Chinese J-31. It is estimated that this data saved the country almost 25 years of research and development. J-31 made its first flight in 2012 and a greatly improved version was spotted in 2017.
In the West, the aircraft fighter is considered as a fifth-generation fighter, although China states it's a four-generation combat ship. So far, we have only limited info about the J-31.
It looks like the new aircraft will soon reach the production stage. Some sources state that China aims to build almost 1,000 of these stealth fighters. The aircraft may be offered to export customers.
J-31 looks very much like the American F-22 Raptor. The stealth aircraft is smaller than the Chengdu J-20, a Chinese plane that was seen in 2010. It's almost the same size as the F-35 fighter, and also shares some common features.
The J-31 prototype is armed with two Russian KlimovRD-93 engines. However, the engines in the end product may be different. These engines may be built inside the country. The fighter has a top speed of 1.9 Mach (2,222km/h) and the combat speed is around 1,400km/h.
J-31 can carry up to 8 tones of weapons and feature two internal weapon bays. Each of them has enough space for two missiles. Also, there are external weapon bays in every wing for missiles that will be mounted externally.
It is considered that J-31 can be used as a multi-purpose fighter in carriers and will be deployed from the new Chinese aircraft carriers. Lately, the Chinese government shows a high interest in the development of fighter aircraft.
