The concept of a flying military base can sound crazy and futuristic, but it's realistic. We are for sure referring to something smaller than Avenger's carrier.
How It Would Look
Theoretically, the technology stage of 2022 would be enough for building a flying base. Of course, the base would have zero point if it wasn't moving, right? The concept of a flying moving base, it's pretty ambitious and crazy if you consider the crazy amounts of power it would require.
And eventually, what are the pros over a land military base? Now, it's the right time to discuss a flying aircraft carrier. That's the only type of flying base that has a realistic future. Of course, there are a lot of issues that must be solved. But at least we know its purpose.
DARPA thought of an even more realistic idea. The American organization wants to build a flying aircraft carrier, specially designed for drones. If you take in mind that a critical feature of the drones is their range, that proposal is logical
Drones aren't so heavy as aircraft, and they cost less for deploying. They are also smaller and can launch/take-off much easier. If the concept becomes a real thing, the usage of drones will be even more effective.
Will it become true?
Okay, even with the compromise of a flying drone carrier, the whole program is still encountering a lot of issues, First of all, the drones can already land and take off from standard carriers. If you consider the US Navy already deploys carriers all over the world, why would it need a flying carrier? The only answer is that a flying drone carrier would make sense only above land territories.
The funding of such a project is another cover. Even if a project like this reaches the production stage, it would be so expensive to build and operate. On the battlefield, we already know that air targets are easier to be shut down. So, does it worth the risk?
Of course. An aircraft carrier for drones would provide many advantages over a typical carrier. That's why we believe this concept will become a reality one day.
