Greece-Saudi Arabia strengthen cooperation: Athens sends Patriot missiles to Riyadh

Greece "forges" alliances with the countries of the Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are the strongest powers in the region and are linked by a common ground with Greece, which is Erdogan's provocative actions.

After the UAE, Greece in a few words concludes agreements with Saudi Arabia. Many may react, because they will claim, and perhaps rightly so, that while Turkey is provoking, we are giving up critical weapons to third parties.

However, this is not the case, because behind the mission, there are other agreements with Riyadh, which will be published in the near future and will be positive for our country.

The general assessment of the relations between the two countries is positive in many areas, while the signing of a defense agreement between Greece and the UAE shook the waters in the Gulf, introducing the Greek armed forces in the region and this is of strategic importance for the geopolitical glamour of our country.

In the next period and after the visit of the Greek Foreign Minister to Saudi Arabia, it is certain that we will have developments especially in the defense sector, which will support the international position of Greece in the region of the Middle East.

Greece will sign an agreement with Saudi Arabia on the deployment of Patriot missiles, according to Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias.

During the debate in the Parliament for the new organization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Dendias stated that "this is a defense weapon that we will give to Saudi Arabia". He pointed out that our country "does not and has never pursued an aggressive policy."

The American-made Patriots are one of the most modern anti-aircraft / anti-ballistic missiles. The agreement, which was being prepared for months, was "closed" last year, in January 2020, at the meeting in Athens of Nikos Dendias with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Saudi Arabia, Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud.

After the meeting, Mr. Dendias had stated at the time: "Our bilateral relations (with Saudi Arabia) have acquired, as you have noticed, a special dynamic. "And this for Greece, for the Hellenic Republic, is a strategic choice, given that Saudi Arabia is a very important country not only in the Arabian Peninsula but also in the wider region."

He concluded: "We have agreed with my Saudi counterpart to stay in close contact and also to work together as pillars of stability in the region."
